Fairhope youth tutor training


 In February 2021 SBLC held a youth tutor training workshop at Fairhope Highschool! Youth Services Coordinator Susan trained 6 Fairhope highschool students in our target reading intervention methods. The highschoolers will be helping tutor local children who are falling behind in school! 

Fall 2020 Tutor Appreciation Event 

November 2020 South Baldwin Literacy Council held our annual tutor appreciation event! The event looked a little bit different this year due to COVID - 19 safeguards, however, we wanted to honor and thank our tutors nonetheless! Allison baked brownies, drowsy poet donated coffee, and we served Lickin good donuts!  Tutors were presented with certificates, awards, and gifts for all of their hard work! Thank you to all who came out for the event and we truly appreciate all that you do for our community!

Book and Bear Drive thru


During COVID-19 SBLC switched gears and opened up a drive -thru to give out free books and bears to children in Baldwin County. 151 local families drove thru and received free books for their children!

February 12th 2020 South Baldwin Literacy Council held our first tutor training workshop of 2020! 12 Adult tutors attended the training session. Special thanks to Bob Pumford and Martha Morales for their presentations. Topics covered:  IXL and Strategies for Engaging Math students.

Annual Mission Appeal 2019

December 2019 South Baldwin Literacy Council launched its first ever Mission Appeal! The fundraiser supports our mission of strengthening our community through literacy. Mullet Wrapper covered the event Mullet Wrapper - Give the Holiday Gift of Literacy 

SBLC does not receive any state or federal funding. This holiday season consider giving the gift of literacy by supporting South Baldwin Literacy Council.


Open House and Ribbon Cutting

November 20th 2019 the SBLC held an Open House and Ribbon cutting event to celebrate the addition of 4 new classrooms to our building! Both the South Baldwin and Coastal Alabama Chambers of Commerce came to host the event. During the event the Coastal Alabama Business chamber declared Nov 20th as Literacy Day! Thank you to all who came out, we appreciate the community support!

Youth Tutor Training workshop 

In November 2019 we held a youth tutor training workshop! We had tutors from the South Baldwin Literacy Council as well as the Snook youth club. Guest Speaker was Foley Elementary's Reading Coach Cassia Niblack.

Tutor Appreciation Luncheon 

On Oct 17th 2019 The South Baldwin Literacy Council held a tutor appreciation luncheon. 25 Volunteer tutors attended to receive materials, training and lunch. Thank you tutors for all that you do for our community!


Trivia Night Fundraiser

August of 2019 the South Baldwin Literacy Council held our Annual Trivia Night Fundraising Event. The event takes place in the Foley Civic Center and features 8 rounds of trivia, a silent and live auction, costume contest and more!

Poetry Reading Event

On November 4th 2018, we hosted a Poetry Reading Event at the Drowsy Poet Coffee Shop in Foley. We wanted to provide a platform for poets to read their poetry and for the community to experience poetry. We had several participants recite their own poetry including our board member, Steven Gillis, and our student, Mykel Knight, as well as award winning poets from the Alabama Poet's Society.

GED Graduation Night

On June 8th, 2018, SBLC hosted a graduation ceremony for our GED students. The event was held at Liberty Church in Foley, AL.  Speakers at the event included Joy Stehlik from Springhill Suites Hotel; GED graduate, Ashley Golden; and tutors, Alice Davidson and Randy Miller. The refreshments were provided by Jennifer Spruiell and Publix of Gulf Shores.
