FOUNDATIONAL LITERACY COURSES

Civic Literacy

The South Baldwin Literacy Council offers a free Civic Literacy course. This course is designed to teach students how to participate in their community and society. In this course, students will learn about the United States government, the rights and responsibilities of U.S. citizens, the importance of voting, and more.

Cultural Literacy

The South Baldwin Literacy Council offers a free Cultural Literacy course. This course is designed to help students learn to communicate and collaborate with those from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. In this course, students will learn the importance of family traditions, participate in various cultural activities, and explore cultures in museums, festivals, historical sites, and performances.

Digital Literacy

The South Baldwin Literacy Council, in partnership with Foley Public Library, offers a free Digital Literacy course. This program is designed to equip students with the knowledge needed to effectively use technology. Students will learn how to operate a computer, navigate the internet, use Microsoft Office, use Google Suite, and utilize Social Media.

Emotional Literacy

The South Baldwin Literacy Council offers a free Emotional Literacy course. This course is designed to teach students how to identify and express their own emotions as well as recognize and respond to the feelings of others. In this course students will learn how to manage anxiety and stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges, and more.

Financial Literacy

The South Baldwin Literacy Council offers free Financial Literacy classes. These classes are designed to provide adult students with the knowledge to improve financial decision-making. Students will learn how to create a budget, avoid predatory lending practices, take advantage of community resources, and more. Saturday workshops in 2023 (May 13, June 10, August 12, and November 11) now offered at the SBLC office in Foley. Online SBLC Ramsey Education Classroom available for young adults (16-24). Customizable financial literacy classes are available to community groups. Call 251-850-3961 to discuss your financial education needs.

Health Literacy

The South Baldwin Literacy Council offers a free Health Literacy course. This course is designed to equip students with the knowledge to make well-informed health decisions. Students will learn how to read and comprehend health-related materials including prescription bottles, discharge instructions, appointment notes, and more.

Wellness Literacy

The South Baldwin Literacy Council offers a free Wellness Literacy course. This course is designed to encourage students to take ownership of their personal wellness and make choices that improve the overall quality of life. Students will improve their wellness in multiple dimensions: emotional, physical, occupational, social, spiritual, intellectual, environmental, and financial.
