We are proud to announce that we recently graduated 13 GED students. We currently have ESL students from the countries of Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Honduras, Venezuela, Italy and Korea. Below, we have highlighted a few of our most recent success stories in the Adult Literacy and Adult Language programs!
Robin received his GED diploma late November of 2019. Robin completed 6 months of 1 on 1 tutoring with the South Baldwin Literacy Council before passing all 4 sections of his GED! We are very proud of Robin's hard work! Robin is now enrolled in our Learn to Earn Program and is working on building a competitive resume, job coaching and interview skills. Congratulations Robin, thank you for allowing us to work with you!
Congratulations, Trina, on your new job! Trina is from Venezuela and started coming to Advanced English classes Fall of 2019. Little did she know that the skills she learned in class would help her land her first professional job! “I’m a dentist and I want to continue my career here in the United States. I will do whatever it takes.” In her ESL class, she worked on career skills in English such as creating a resume, completing online applications and mock interviews. After her first interview with a local orthodontic practice, she came back to class very excited. “Everything they asked in the interview was what we covered in class! They offered me a job!” She now has a full time position as an orthodontic assistant and continues to come to class on her days off.
Ricardo Noriega is one of our GED graduates. He came to the Literacy Council for help last fall. He worked two jobs as a server in the evenings and found the hours stressful trying to be a husband and father to his small children. He had been offered a better job with benefits if only he had his GED. He knew it was time. "I felt really discouraged when I first took the test and only passed 3 out of the 4 subject tests. That was 15 years ago. I had tried taking some classes since but it just never worked out." The key to Ricardo's success was working one on one with his math tutor, Don. "Don never let me give up." In a little over 6 months, he completed each one of his subject tests and now has his diploma! He recently stopped in the office to tell us about his new position. Ricardo went on to get his CDL license and is driving for Coca-Cola. "I am working days and now have time to spend with my family. I love this job and I never could have gotten it without my GED. I appreciate you guys so much." Congratulations, Ricardo!
Clifford L. Brown came to the SBLC in June of 2016, as a 17-year-old, unemployed student. Clifford’s goals were to obtain his GED, to get his driver’s license, and to be accepted into cosmetology school. We tutored him in all subjects for about a year. He had to move to Texas to take care of a sick family member for a few months in the middle of his classes, but he still stayed in touch with the SBLC. In January 2018, Clifford returned and began tutoring again. In February, Clifford passed all of his needed subjects and obtained his GED! We provided him with information on a cosmetology college in Mobile, and we have assisted him with financial aid applications to attend. He is currently employed full-time in the Houston area.
Carina Rojas has been an Adult ESL student for 3 years. She is a wife and a mother of two young boys. She is also expecting a baby girl soon. In addition to being an ESL student, she has been a student at Coastal Alabama Community College, where she recently received her Office Administration certificate. At one point, Carina's husband fell from a roof and had to have several surgeries and a lot of therapy; therefore, she had to take an eight month break from ESL classes. This break did not stop Carina. She has come back to class with new, larger goals. She is devoted to her studies and is constantly working to improve her language skills.
Mykel Knight is a learner with SBLC and has participated in multiple programs including GED preparation, budgeting, Learn 2 Earn, calculator class and independent living skills. Recently, Mykel passed a portion of his GED exam after much hard work and studying. He is well on his way to completion! He is also a very talented writer and poet. Mykel looks forward to publishing his books in the very near future!
Update: Mykel published his first book Titled Unique - A Golden Deluxe Poem For Brilliant Women. Click here to view on amazon!
I showed up to the Literacy Council full of hope and doubts, but the teachers were always there to help encourage me, going above and beyond. Clara, Mexico
Language is the tool of life. Learning hear has benefited me greatly. I am now just a normal person who can communicate in English. Yurong, China
It gave me the opportunity to learn to speak English in order to get my first job in this country. My tutor and teacher have been more than friends, angels who have walked beside me on this difficult path of being an immigrant. I am infinitely grateful to the Literacy Council. I love it! Your work is very valuable. Jeannine, Venezuela
